Salesforce MCP: what is it, what can it do and is it safe?
Since this summer, you hear it everywhere: headless 360 is supposed to change the way you work with your customer data, independent of the screen and ready for the future. Headless itself doesn’t originate in the CRM world: it has existed for years in content and webshop systems. In 2026, Salesforce slapped its own name on it: Headless 360, as part of its AI strategy. Salesforce put it front and center at its own big annual event. For many management teams, the question is about the business case: what exactly is it, and why would you invest time and budget in it.
Your Salesforce data is structured in objects such as accounts, contacts and deals, along with the rules that go with them (for example: a deal can only be called “Closed Won” once the signature is in). Normally, you can only reach it through the Salesforce screen.
With an API connection, another channel, such as a custom portal or an AI chat, can show or update that same data.
That capability has existed for years, through the standard Salesforce APIs. The “headless” label is the “new” part.
New or not, the concept is valuable. At Hapert Trailers, for example, we built a dealer portal where dealers configure and place orders and then track them, completely independent of the Salesforce screen. We were already doing this kind of work for many clients, well before headless had a name. Exactly what is now called “headless”.
You could already apply the same approach between Salesforce and AI with custom development, for example to ask an AI questions about your own data. Salesforce has now made that connection easier, based on an established standard: MCP. You switch it on yourself in the AI you use, such as Claude or Copilot. No separate build project and no developer. Being able to switch it on yourself is the new part: before, a connection like that had to be built separately for each tool.
At Welisa, we look at that foundation, not at the label. If the foundation is solid, a step like MCP is a quick one to take, and that’s pretty cool: soon you’ll simply be chatting with your Salesforce data.
Headless 360 is mostly a new label for something that already existed. Salesforce MCP is the step that now comes on top of it, with AI.
Curious how to set this up for yourself and what it will do for you in practice?
